Just A Few Thoughts

about Summer

Summer’s half over. Too bad! Carol and I could enjoy ten months of summer. We have a special tradition each summer. Our kids and grandkids come up to the cottage for a week to spend time with their grandparents. I’ll bet we catch lots of fish this week!

Let me share a few random thoughts about what’s going on this summer. Tom Klingbiel has been in the intensive care unit of U.W. Hospital this week. Thanks for praying for him. As of right now, it doesn’t look like surgery will be needed. Rick Saindon got a new job this week up in the Twin Cities. He is a very, very happy camper! We had our first meeting of our new elder board; they have selected Ray Unger to be the chairmen of Gateway’s Search Committee. In the next few weeks, he will be sharing with you your role in selecting the members of this committee. Jesse and Lisa Harman had their final car wash yesterday. They’re leaving for the Ukraine after next weekend. It’s going to be our chance to lift them up in prayer, next Sunday. Hope you can come.

Last week, Carol and I went to a family wedding in the Chicago area. It was a really beautiful affair. Although the bride and groom were married outdoors at a country club, it was essentially a religious ceremony. The minister began the ceremony by stating that although the bride and groom came from different Christian denomination, both had been baptized as infants and thus had entered into the life of Christ’s body, the church.

I have been thinking about his words all week long. In some ways I found myself thinking "How simple…how inclusive…how popular." Now my mind was really racing. I looked at the crowd and thought: "good people, trying to live good lives." I thought of my own extended family - not very religious, but good people. But the thought that fascinated me was this: "Here you are, Dick…spending your whole life trying to persuade a disinterested public into believing that Christianity is something more than this. Are you arrogant? Or are you just crazy?"

I’m glad you’re here this morning. My message today will be about what the Lord put on my heart in answer to that question. I hope you’re wide awake…especially if you have ever wondered if what the Bible says about Jesus is really important!

Because He Lives,

Pastor Dick
